What does a judge look for when showing an Appaloosa at halter?
-They look for the same things that a quarter horse judge would look for. They look at the horse's conformation. They look for a horse that is balanced and proportionate without conformational flaws such as cow hocks, toes in etc. Mares should be feminine, and stallions and geldings should be masculine. They like small ears, expressive eyes, and good dentition (yes they do look in the mouth). They like a horse that is well-muscled. Sometimes I think there is too much muscle on the winning horses but that's the style. In an appaloosa halter class, they also like to see mottling, hoof striping and white sclera as breed characteristics but this does not hold much weight. If your horse were in a colour class, then the colour would be very important. They look for the same things that a quarter horse judge would look for. They look at the horse's conformation.
