Why is it so hard for people to put a dog on a lead?

-I have been attacked by other peoples dogs when I was younger and I am not very happy about being around them. I am happy to keep my side of the path if they keep theirs. The problem is that a lot of people refuse to put their dogs on leads when they are near other people and near little children. I am fed up of getting dogs running up and running around my ankles or my little one. All I ask is to keep the dog out of mine and my little ones personal space.

I was out walking the other day and a ageing yobbo with a dog saw us coming and made every effort possible to keep the dog out the way of our little one which I really respected him for and thanked him. A bit latter on we passed a few middle aged couples who made no effort at all to control their dogs and we were just sworn at when we protested to the dog coming near.

Some of us have had bad experiences with dogs and just don't want them near us. Just keep them on a lead or out of the way. Especially near little ones. Please.I'm afraid their is no particular answer to what you said, except that I completley understand your problem. I love dogs to bits, but I understand what a horrible experience with a dog can do to somebody, and it is irresponsible and insensitive to others when people don't keep their dogs under control, out of respect for others!!

The only thing you could do is, if there is one particular person whose dog(s) keeps coming near you, or acting in any way intrusive or scaring you, and they wont put it on a lead, you can report it and make the person put it on a lead no matter what they say, it is your right to do so. Other than that, I hope nothing terrible like that ever happens again, and I feel for you and dislike those rude disrespectful people!I completely agree. I think that people love their dogs a lot and think they're harmless, even if it's not. Also, they figure that everyone should love dogs. People like that really annoy me, and I completely understand how you feel.
Hope you feel better after your rant. This is not the place for rants.
what is a lead? and quit being a drama queen
I do respect your opinion and agree to a point. What I want to know, are your reaction to dogs creating a fear of dogs in the "little ones". Children generally copy the adult.

I have encountered the opposite. I have encountered children running up to my dogs and try to pet or chase my dogs. There parents are either no where to be found OR just dont' care as long as the kids are not bothering them. Also, I am a little tired of overly dramatic kiddies, start screaming in fear as me & my dogs are passing, on leash, especially when the kids are older kids, usually girls.

So, keep your kids away from me and my dogs. Teach your kiddies to always ask before petting and no when to leave. If I'm in the park, sitting on the grass with my dogs, minding my own business, I don't want to end up babysitting your kids.
I'm afraid I'm on the other side of the fence with this one. YOU had a bad experience with a dog and I understand that, but dont expect everyone else to pay the price for it. Dogs need to run, dogs need exercise and that means being off lead. Yes you get the odd tosspot who's dog is uncontrolable but for the most part they are okay. There is no side of the path for you and a side for them, this is everyones planet and the dogs have as much right to run around on it as you do.

I feel sorry for your child as you are passing your fear and your bad experience onto him and thats not fair. My dog actually gets frightened when a child screams at him, stupid thing is my dog is only a baby himself and is more scared of the children than the children are of him!!

dogs were on this planet before humans were.
if there is a leash law they should be on a leash ... but having said that my dog does not run up to other people, kids, dogs, animals (when she is on or off leash), but she is constantly run up and pet by little kids without my permission ... my dog is friendly so i do not have to worry but the owner of that child needs to worry because the next dog might bite ... and meaning no disrespect but to me it sounds like you have a dog phobia resulting from whatever trauma you had to go through ... if you do, nothing will make you feel safe around dogs short of therapy ... that is a psychological issue that you need to deal with on your own ... and don't make your kids fearful of dogs as that would be unfair and unsafe ... i have a small dog and a woman in my building has a phobia of dogs ... even if i am holding my dog she is fearful my dog is suddenly going to attack (never has) ... i control my dog, you control your kids, and get help for your phobia because you may not want them near you or just out of the way, which is not realistic ... dogs are part of our society and there is more likelihood of you beating your phobia than dogs staying out of your way for a lifetime ...
I can sympathise with your predicament, but the elephant in the room says you need counselling to allow yourself and your child to be in a public place where dogs are present and often off leash.

If you read the short article in the link it may empower you to know what dogs are 'thinking' and 'saying'.

http://www.canis.no/rugaas/onearticle.ph鈥?/a>

Whilst it is polite behaviour for people to prevent their dogs running up to strangers, it isn't mandatory.
You would assume that, if a dog is off its lead, it must be gentle. But this is not true. There's a new story every week about a child getting mauled. Or an adult. Or another dog. I wish fenced off areas were available for dog walkers/people who wish to stay away from dogs. I love dogs. I have two myself but I crap myself whenever a dog is off it's lead and it runs up to us if I have my little girl with me or my dogs. And don't get me started on the poo! Some people shouldn't be allowed to own animals.

EDIT: I just had to add that, recently, on my local news, they reported that there had been a spate of attacks on GUIDE DOGS for the blind which is beyond disgraceful. There was one particular story where one guide dog was chased a few hundred yards, mauled and then made its way back to it's handler & got them home safe. People who knowingly let a vicious dog run loose are nothing short of criminal.
Most dogs aren't as inhibited as you seem to be, and will approach you to sniff you and to introduce themselves to you in a very friendly manner. If you jump, wave your hands in the air, and make silly faces, or run, the dog thinks you're trying to play and will respond likewise. The best thing to do if you are scared, is to extend your fist so the dog can smell it, then withdraw it and walk away as if nothing had happened. Hey. Dogs are people too, and deserve respect!!! Have a wonderful day.

Can I use Dawn on my Pup?

-We ran out of Doggy shampoo and right now we dont have enough to buy more, but we do have Dawn dishsoap with the hand lotion. Its pink. Should I? Can I?You can use it but don't make it your regular shampoo. We use dawn ultra concentrated dish soap on dogs that have gotten into things such as paint thinner, paint, sticky stuff ect.Munch is so right -- I don't know how many times dimwits have come on and recommended dishliquid for flea control as if it were harmless to the poor animal.

It's DETERGENT - it is meant to strip OIL and tar off the coats of animals, in short, it's a very, very strong detergent. It doesn't kill fleas, the eggs and larvae hatch and the fleas come right back.

It doesn't clean your dog, it strips the oil from his coat, irritates his skin and, if it gets down his throat, literally burns his insides.

Unless your dog is covered in oil and tar, use shampoo made for dogs. If you don't have any and MUST wash your dog (why can't you wait until you can buy some?), use a LITTLE bit of human shampoo --- just a little.

Dogs need the oil in their coats and they sure don't need their skin irritated by detergents.
How often do you bathe your dog? Pet dogs don't need to be bathed nearly as often as most people think (of course, show/competition dogs are bathed more often).

Only when ABSOLUTELY necessary should you shampoo your pet dog. It is bad for their coat and skin to shampoo them too often.

If this is one of those absolutely necessary times, then yes... Dawn isn't going to kill him, but try with just water. I like Johnson's Baby shampoo.
i swear the dawn dishwashing soap company should be sued for those commercials showing wild animals being bathed in their dish soap ... those animals are coated in crude oil and still the soap is diluted ... but fools watch that commercial and think, hey, let's bath the dog it is okay on the commercial ... should you - NO ... can you - i am sure you can ... for just one time use the mildest people shampoo you have ... do not use dish soap on your dog ...
I would not because dog wash is specially made for dogs and dish soap is not it is to strong just hold off on the soap wash and get some more soap when you get the chance. You don't want to take a chance and damage or irritate your doggys skin :)
NO!. I have actually checked with P&G customer service. They say don't use Dawn on dogs.

I seldom if ever bathe dogs. Frequent brushing with a soft bristled brush keeps their skin and coat in good shape, shiny, odor free, and clean.
Dawn is great for removing skunk odors, oil etc. It is strong and will dry out your pets skin so I recommend not to. If your desperate to wash your dog just use regular other than that I would wait.
Why not? They use Dawn on those little birdies on the commercials..

but I suggest you wait until you can get some dog shampoo lmfao :)
No. Wait til you get doggie shampoo

Is it healthy for a Guinea pig to eat celery?

-I am wondering if it is healthy for a guinea pig to have celery as a treat and what is a guinea pigs favorite treat? It is best to start your guinea pigs out on dark green leafy veggies such as kale, dandelion greens Swiss chard, romaine lettuce, parsley, any of the salad mixes you can find in the health food stores are good, not the prepacked ones you get in stores like Safeway. I have fed my girl all dark green leafy veggies to the point one of them does not even like the lighter leafs of romaine lettuce. The dark green leafy veggies have the highest Vitamin C counts of all the veggies and believe it or not they would just as soon have them as any thing. Fruits are to high in sugar to be good for them so only fed them fruit as a treat ever 3 days or so, also it is high in acid so if you fed it daily it will cause sores in their mouth.Guinea pigs love carrots as a treat but here again you are dealing with high sugar counts so only 1 baby carrot daily or 1/2" of a regular carrot daily.Celery is an OK treat but be sure to cut into small pieces so it does not choke on the strings in it, I have had several guinea pigs that only likes the leafs of the celery and it really is not all that high in Vitamin C.Yes, it is definitely healthy to give guinea pigs celery. Ours used to eat celery all the time, they loved it. Really any salady stuff is healthy for a guinea pig. Over my childhood and teenage years I had 6 guinea pigs at different times, and all of them loved lettuce best, but other treats which they love were tomatoes and red peppers.
all guinea pigs have different tastes i suggest you see if the guinea pig eats the celery. If the guinea pig does then you should be okay.

what I'm saying is the guinea pig should know what it likes and doesn't like.
Yes, but not too much.

Many guinea pigs like baby carrots, romaine lettuce, and cherry tomatoes.

Go to:

guinealynx.info

for lots of information.
It really depends on how she feels about celery. Weather she likes it or not.

(basicly what the first guy said) =)
I've had one. All guinea pigs have different taste, like humans. I suggest trying all fruits and veggies, tasty ones of course. Some guinea pigs might not like celery, but it would be a good snack.
Its okay for them to eat celery but most guinea pigs like are carrots and hay (:
Yes but just don't feed them too much as they will get sick!
YUP!
Yes
of course its healthy! My guinea pigs fav treat was lettuce

Question about my dog.?

-My dog acts normal and is hyper like always. But she won't eat her food. She ate the same food for a week and loved it. Then she suddenly stopped eating. I only give her one puppy sized milkbone a day. Why won't she eat? She just had a check up and everything was okay.my dog used to do the same thing and then I gave him something else and he started eating. Give your dog something else if she eats it then she doesnt like the other food if she doesnt eat it then something might be wrong with her stomach or smt like that .:/In your other questions you said you would give your dog cheese, hard boiled eggs, and other human food and now you are saying you only give your dog left over steak every month. She got used to the human food and does not want her dog food anymore so now you have to keep trying and never give her human food again (even as a treat or left over). Hope I helped :D
If you ever gave it human food it will not eat it's dog food anymore so maybe that's y.
food poison maybe?

Can someone help me with water bottles?

-My new hamster cage came with one, it leaked. Since then I have bought three others and each leaked worse than the last. The old bottle is in use elsewhere.

Is there a certain brand I should buy? Can I somehow fix this pile of useless ones? Three leak from the ball and one leaked so badly from where it screwed together, I couldn't even fix it with a gasket.

If someone can help I would really appreciate it.Had the same problem! Went to a local petstore about 5 months ago and it still works perfect!! the brand is "Lixit".

Traning blooper help rrrr?

-im traning my horse to sidepass now and i got one side down but then she acts up and acts like we did no traning on that side. the other side is worse she will do it with other things to how do i fix this and somtmes i cry and i cant controll my self does this affect my traningYou've probably heard this before but horses can sense every feeling you have. i had the same problem except with the right lead and so the minute you go to try you know it will be a big battle and have a negative mindset. in your mind imagine her doing it perfectly and take big long breathes before starting go in with a positive mindset and just because that's not hard enough keep your mind that way. Walk your horse up to the corner of a fence with the fence to the front of you and the side of the corner to the side you don't want your horse do go to so if your having trouble going to the right put the fence to the right and in front of you. the minute your horse even leans over to the correct side release all pressure and do a circle or something. Then come back to the same spot and keep going like that until she can step and hopefully if you keep with it stay calm it will become easy. what ever side she has problems side passing to is probably her weaker side do lots of work on that side. Oh ps as odd as it sounds keep your reins extra loose you'll feel out of control but she will be calmer and make the corner the good place with lots of love in it. And don't forget if you act like you have all day it will take 10 minutes but if you act like you have 10 minutes it will take all day in other words take your time baby steps so she doesn't get frustrated.stop rushing it and stop crying. if you're going to be effective at training, you can't let your emotions control you and you can't pitch fits, and you can't be a baby about it.

you need to suck it up and be mature and keep your feelings out of it. because your feelings of frustration make you act like someone your horse doesn't want to listen to. I mean, you get in your own way, and you make things worse by pitching hissy fits.

go back and start over. and keep your head. stay calm and cool and ask your horse for one sidepass step. reward. only ask for 1 step on Monday.

then ask for 2 steps on Tuesday. take it easy and take the time it takes for your horse to understand.

and Wednesday you ask for 3 steps, etc...

when you take the time it takes, your horse will really learn.

when you rush it and demand and get your panties in a bunch, you get nothing and learn that you didn't really get the job done.
While your training never give up. ever. or the horse will think he/she has won the battle. Crying completely affects the training in a bad way, when you get upset like that make it act right then get off wait til you feel better and try again.
Trololol?
Get a trainer.

Where to buy CHICKEN FEED in New Hampshire?

-I have no idea what place sells chicken feed, grit, scratch, etc. Where would I go? I live in Lebanon, so the closer the better. Please help, thanks!Call your seed and feed stores - even some hardware stores carry chicken feed. If you have chicks, you need chick crumbles, if you have full grown chickens you need chicken scratch and layer crumbles for laying hens.

Help, something is wrong with my cats eye?

-I noticed yesterday that my cat was squinting, and he had this mucusy/watery stuff coming out of his eye. I don't really know what to do, I know what you are going to say, Take him to the vet, but first off it's saturday, and secdond I just asked my grandma, and she said she cannot afford it at the moment. My dad was going to put eye drops in the eye yesterday, but I stopped him, because I do not know if it would be safe. I don't know what is wrong with him. It could be he has a scratch in his eye, because my other cat does not like him, but I'm really not sure. Help me.Try putting a warm cloth around the eye area, and clean away any mucus coming from your cat's eye. Then try and see if you can notice anything that might be in his eye, maybe he has gotten a hair in there. If he continues to have mucus coming out of his eye, you may need to take him to a vet. However, I would continue to use the warm cloth for a few days, morning and night and see if this will help to clear it up. If your cat does not to seem bothered by his eye, it is probably nothing to be alarmed with and should clear up on its own.most likely an eye scratch or irritation. But if he starts to sneeze then he might have an upper respiratory infection. I wouldn't worry about it unless it doesn't stop. If it doesn't stop then you can try L-lysine and it will help with his eye.
Try wiping/holding a warm wet cloth over the cats eye, gently. It will help to wipe away any infection on the outside and try to soak up stuff that's in the eye. Try this once every couple hours.
It could be something as simple as an allergy, making his eye water. Cats can be allergic to things just like we are, and not that the house is closed up with A/C & fans on, it's easier for eyes to get dust, lint, or "dry eye"......making the tear ducts work overtime.

Out of 11 indoor, cats, I have ONE whose eyes water ( get goopy "boogers" next to the nose ), and I just take a soft tissue and clean them. A damp cloth works better, but she doesn't want me to mess with her, so I "catch" her whenever I can, and use whatever's handy.

I NEVER put drops in any of my cats' eyes.....just clean whenever needed.

If your cat's eye doesn't get any better, or gets worse, he'll need to go to the vet....to get some "proper" drops for animals......

Hope this helps, and he feels better soon........Good luck.

How to teach a rottweiler puppy bite inhibition??

-my rottweiler is 5 weeks old. I got her when she was 4 weeks old because unfortunately her mother was killed. I know you should take a puppy home when it is at least 6 weeks old but this is the case of a misfortune. anyway....the problem is that she bites too hard. How can I teach her bite inhibition? I really need help for the future of this rottweiler. help!!!since she no longer has mummy, you need to take that role, female dogs will growl and stare a pup in the eyes, then ignore it when it bites her, if it keeps going she will grab it's scruff(don't lift) , growl and gently shake pup untill it goes limp.

then if this doesn't work she will put it on it's back, and pinch it's stomach with her teeth

if you put pup on it's back DON'T let go untill pup has stopped thrashing around and is lying quite still, if you do let go too Early, you are teaching pup that it's stronger then you therefore it's boss

another way to stop biting Is to hold pups muzzle shut and growl n stare in the eyes, this worked really well for me but now my dogs unhappy about anything touching her mouthEvery time she bites you, make a quick, sharp, high-pitched squealing noise (like her siblings would when they play together). This should put her off. If it doesn't, every time she bites you, leave the room. Everybody leave the room. She wont like that and should learn that biting makes everyone go away : (
moog is right thats what you do with cats and dogs with that problem

Why does my cat always have a "kick" in her tail? I have seen loads of other cats who don't have one.?

-A kink in an animal's tail comes from being broken and then healing crooked. This usually happens at birth or when they're very young. It's not a problem.A kink in an animal's tail comes from being broken and then healing crooked. This usually happens at birth or when they're very young. It's not a problem.Do you mean a 'kick' which means an involuntary movement, or a 'kink'? If it is a kink she might have had some type of accident previously. If it is a kick, my cats tail does this a lot - it is not unusual.
Kink? Like a bent spot? Some cats are born that way. Others have had an injury somewhere along the line that didn't heal properly.

How do you sex a cat?

-I've got a stray and someone who thinks it might be there who went missing in Dec 2010 i'd love to give it back to them but not if its not there, i have photos and it looks ALOT like it.

How do i tell its sex? theres is a nuetered male its very friendlyUpon reading the title to your question, a million jokes all of a sudden rushed into my head and nearly knocked me unconscious. I can't stop giggling!

All right. Well, you can tell if it's a neutered male if the space between its penis and anus is more than an inch wide. If it's a female, the space between the genitals and anus will be less than an inch apart from each other. If you're not sure, then just bring it to the person who says they are the owner, and they'll know.

I've put a link in the source box to a PDF that shows how to tell the gender of a cat or kitten, just in case you need it.

Good luck!I've noticed a male's meow and a female's meow are very much different. Besides pinning the cat down and raiding their fur, just try to listen to its meows. Males usually have a deeper and more vocal meow, while girls have a higher pitch and chirpy meow. Try finding videos online that you can listen to the difference.
A lot of the times you need a vet to look to see if it's a male or female.

I'm sorry when I first saw your question I thought you meant you wanted to have sex with a cat. :s

Be careful when you word things.
I do not drive either - I have to get a taxi to the vets. If the person is the owner, they could reimburse the fare to you.
The space between the anus and urinary tract opening in the male is greater than in the female.
ask an expert, if neutered, it's hard to say.
It's impossible, after they're neutered.

The only thing that SOMETIMES works is putting them in a sack and throwing them in a lake. If it sinks, it was male. If it floats, it's female.

This works 25% of the time.

WHY CAN'T YOU GO TO THE VET?!

I don't have a clue what is on your poison. You need to call poison control or a vet, read the ingredietnts to them, and tell them how much he ate.

You will be doing this AS YOU ARE ON THE WAY TO THE VET.

Or let him die a slow, painful death. That's an option too.
You need to take it to the vet. Depending on how much the dog ate of it it could possibly die. If you can't afford maybe you can apply for care credit online but Idk if you will get it. In my opinion money is not a matter when it comes to my dogs.
The best thing you can do now is take her/him to the vet. If there aren't any vets open, take them to the hospital, that's what I would do, and hurry! You don't want to waste time! Trust me!
Take your dog to the Vet ASAP! Why are you asking us on yahoo answers? what do we know? go to the vet now! get off the computer and go now! depending on how powerfull the poison is a dog can die in a matter of minutes!
Give it some milk. My mom's dog ate some poison, and she gave it milk. The dog was fine afterwords. My mom still took it to the vet.
Why was there roach poison on...oooh, to attract them...why cant you go to the vet!!??? you have to! can you get it to throw up!? Poor puppy :'((((
relax just call the vet or the poision control center and they would help you pray to god to just save this wonderful puppy of yours
how much poison was in there? call the vet immediately!
OMG!!! Thats why you dont do it out in the open where kids, dogs, etc cant get to it
TAKE HIM TO THE VET! WASH HIS MOUTH OUT! DON'T SIT ON THE INTERNET! CALL SOMEONE!
Stop trolling. Yes you can.
dude call the vet i am sure your dog loves you so do it for him
CALL THE VET AND MAKE IT DRINK LOTS OF WATER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
TAKE HIM TO 24 HOUR VET. NOW. Good luck, hope they're ok.
take him to your vet or trusted animal hospital!!!!!
make it drink hydrogen peroxide so it will vomit. get it all out. you will have to force it down
I KNOW WHAT YOU CAN ******* DO!!! YOU CAN GO TO A **** VET DUMB ***!!!!!
Call the vet.

Is it possible??????

-My cat is 8 and she's kinda mean. She scratches , bites and hisses at people quite a bit. Its definately not bad enough to give her up. Any adice on how to make her nicer. Oh and she chases my 17 year old cat.To train my cat I used a spray bottle filled with water. but in this case, you might want to try to let her know that you & your friends aren't going to hurt her. Many people say that cats can't be trained, but its not true. Some people just use wrong methods that cats don't respond to. & others are stubborn and want to do things there way.I have aa kitten who did the same thing but I just held her and got her used to me so now anyone can pick her up. Just make her sit in your lap and pet her. She will try to get away but make her stay.

HELP !? about my cornsnake !!?

-My corn snake has these weird freak outs sometimes like he just goes completely mad and goes as fast as he can all around his cage and then the next minute he goes into his hiding spot and he's fine, I know it can't be stress because I hold him regularly, feed him whenever he needs fed, he has 2 hides and perfect access to water and heat from a heat pad under the gravel, he does this freak out not very often but when he does it scares me in case he's in some sort of trouble, its been happening for many months now and I don't know what it could be ????He maybe see you come into the room and was not expecting cause him to freak out and try to get away, but realizes you are not going to hurt him and relaxes. Or he may be try to get out of his enclosure. He might just be getting spooked, do you have a cat or dog? My corn still tries to get out occasionally during the night, but she calms down after a few minutes of it. He could be stressed out actually, if you hold him too often though. Instead of gravel, you really should use wood chips, or coconut bark or something like that. I don't know how you feed him, but if they ingest it during feeding, it can be digested unlike rocks. (Not that they really should eat it.)
It probobly is stress. Many animals get stressed from the smallest things. If anything he probobly is getting spooked. Just let him know you are there before you go up and grab him.
hey ik im not answering the q but u just answered the q about my corn snake and i was wondering if i should bring him in to the vet?

Are there any Low Cost Animal Clinics in or around the Colorado Springs area?

-I am looking for a low cost animal clinic or a discount vet anywhere in or around the Colorado Springs area. One that not only does Spay/Neuters and Vaccinations, but also other things such as surgeries and general exams. Does anyone know of any? Perhaps any in Pueblo or Castle Rock that they would recommend?Low cost pet care is extremely hard to find. I would suggest getting most of your pet care at a low cost spay and neuter/vaccination place (which are easier to find) and you may just have to fork out the dough for more invasive things such as sergery and such. check out these site though. The best way to find what you are looking for is to do your research. Find ALL or most vets in your area. And then just call around and find out their prices. They will be happy to inform you of their prices. If you can find a "cheap" vet...you can still find the cheapest! :) Good luck.

****Sorry for the large url. Just copy and past it in your search space. there should be two sites. :)

HELP! Black lab has bumps on back with yellow stuff coming out.?

-Iam going to take him to the vet but im scared for him what is it???? First he went to the groomer and we got him a shave and the groomer cut his skin a little bit with the blade. then bumps all over his body started to form, and yellow puss and stuff is coming out!!! please help! what should i do?? i have other dogs at my house should i keep them seperated?Sounds like infection from being shaved and also razor rash.

You should know that a labrador is a fur-bearing breed and as such should never be shaved without a medical reason and a note from the vet. Your groomer can be liable for not telling you the medical risks of shaving a fur-bearing breed. You dog could get alopecia x or black skin disease from being shaved. Also the fur protects the dog's skin from sunburn. A good groomer would absolutely refuse to shave a labrador without notice from a vet, and even then the risks to the dog are bad enough that many would still refuse.how big are the pustules?

if they're small, like pimple size, than it could be ingrown hairs, an allergic reaction to a chemical the groomer used, or points where the groomer slightly damaged your dog's skin with the buzzer. Just clean & sterilize the affected areas multiple times a day. If the pustules do not appear to be getting better in 24-48hrs take your dog to the vet.

If the pustules are larger than a permanent marker tip, clean and sterilize the affected area. take the dog to the vet ASAP.
hey this is a minor problem it's not going to spread it's razor bump anyway if want to take him to the vet it's o.k but you could buy hydrogen peroxide clean the areas that is infected or the hold body rinse the skin off and dry it with a cloth he should be o.k in no time use the peroxide till the infection and bumps are gone i hope every thing work out for you and the dog good luck
Why on earth did you have your lab shaved? He could gave developed clipper rash or an infection/hotspot from the irritation from the clippers. Try cleaning the affected area with either diluted betadine or chlorhexadine from the chemist. He may need some antibiotics from the vet to clear up any infection. Try to prevent him from scratching the area.
It sounds like an infection from the cut, you shouldn't have to keep them seperated. But if your that worried about it then you can.
The bump may be skin cancer. It might be a tumor. The yellow stuff is puss. I would take him to the vet immediatley. I hope your dog doesnt have skin cancer.
Sounds like a skin infection.

How can I tell how old my newt is?

-I have a newt, it was found before my brother was born 20 years ago, it has never been replaced, every time we try to get it a friend, the old newt bites chunks out of it, I just want to know if there's any simple way to get a rough estimate as to how old it actually is, as we have no idea, as it was found on my grandparents driveway 20 years ago, but we have no clue how old it was at the time. Its hard to tell how old a newt is, its basically impossible.

Sorry to tell you, but they aren't like turtles where you can count the rings on their shells.

And please note: Newts are territorial, that probably why it keeps killing other.when were they born? ask if you got them from a pet store, or if you raised it since it was born just take that date and take today's date and figure it out

Who here has pet insurance for their cats? Do they pay for vet bills? what are the benefits?

-Pet insurance is something to be carefully evaluated, based on your feelings and tolerance for risk.

And know what the policy covers, and what it doesn't, and how it is paid. The link I am providing is a good summary of what to consider.

I have multiple cats, and insurance coverage on all of them is just simply too expensive, and some could not be covered anyway, due to their age.

Insurance companies are not out to lose money, so you don't get insurance thinking you may come out ahead. You also hope to not need it.Pet insurance is something to be carefully evaluated, based on your feelings and tolerance for risk.

Insurance companies are not out to lose money, so you don't get insurance thinking you may come out ahead. You also hope to not need it.I did not get pet insurance for my pets because they only cover Emergency bills. On average I pay $150-200 per pet a year for my cat. The dogs are more. And when I took my dog to the ER once, she broke a leg and needed a cast I payed about 4 figures because it was 3am in the morning and emergency. Pet insurance costs more years and does not cover little things. If your pet is sick and you think it will be needing surgery then go for the insurance otherwise it's a lot of money for nothing. This is what I think anyway!
It would be smarter to put the amount you would pay in premiums in a separate account and keep it there just for vet bills. You will have total control of the money and can pay for whatever your pet needs.

I dont no wot to do with my cats?

-i have three cats. two kittens and one mother, the kittens are five months and recently had a fight. they were playin obviously. but 1 of them scratched the udarz eye. its eye was really bad so we tuk it to the vet. we didnt no wot happnd to it. we thought it woz an infection, its eyes bin taken out n stitched closed. my mum sed tht i cnt luk afta 3 so after the kitten goes to take the stiches out, shes gna give it to the pdsa vets to keep. but im scared they might kill it if it doesnt get a home.will they?y?Well yeah, but kittens find homes easy as pie. If I were you I would take it to a no kill shelter.

P.S. to the people who wrote above: That would be text speak...just because people type with it doesn't mean they are uneducated. I use it when I am worried, and obviously this person is, so lay off.Your vet is NOT animal control and they are very unlikely to accept the kitten and try to find a home for it. Due to the economy, vet clinics can no longer afford to provide free care.

If you can't keep the kitten, try to find it a home yourself or take it to animal control yourself. Don't expect any vet clinic to take it.
The two kittens are getting old enough to be territorial. Get them both spayed/neutered. They will calm down and get along better. It will also be easier to find them a new home.
I read that and thought an idiot like this can't look after a pet
Did you ever set foot in a classroom?

What to do with Schnauzer that keeps provoking Pitbull....same household?

-My house, my schnauzer he's 25 pounds...normally not aggressive at all, totally possessive however.. In comes boyfriends dog, american pitbull HUGE around 90 pounds pure muscle, not aggressive, but not neutered either. Both dogs totally lovey with each of us, both socialized. Big problem is because of jealousy my dog (Schnauzer) provokes or lunges at the pitbull and so he responded and tried to chomp him (which he usually never does with smaller dogs) I'm terrified to put them together at all, because the one incident i literally had to throw myself in the doorway between them and throw my dog out the door and slam it, to keep them apart. Should I ever trust that we can desensitize them somehow without him killing my dog with one bite? (his head is twice the size of a human head lol) or should I muzzle both and let the pitbull establish dominance that way, or WHAT???? We want to live together but we both love our dogs wayyyy too much to ever consider getting rid of one. So WHAT TO DO???

Please only people that really understand this situation or that really know about dog behavior and the real dangers of such a powerful breed"should I muzzle both and let the pitbull establish dominance that way, or WHAT????"

Why should the APBT assume the higher position? He has come into the house, not the other way around.

Jealousy is a human emotion, and not one experienced by dogs.

I suspect that this is an issue that has arose from the way in which they were introduced. They should be re-introduced on neutral ground (such as a park that neither visits regularly), and fully under control and calm.

Sometimes, the damage is to great, and you have to accept that the dogs will always have to be separated when no-one is supervising.

You can try seeking out a trainer, but NOT a pet-shop trainer. Ask your vet or local clubs for recommendations.

Good luck.Training: I would respectfully suggest you read a couple of books and watch some videos on raising and training dogs. Also, I recommend two TV shows, "The Dog Whisperer" with Cesar Millan on the National Geographic Channel, and "It's Me or the Dog," with Victoria Stillwell, on Animal Planet. Both programs are very instructive and often deal with the issues you raise here. Good luck!
Bring a toy or something that belongs to one dog to the other (do this with both) so that the dogs can get used to each others' smells. Once they're used to this, you need to let the dogs get used to eachother in a place that neither one will feel the need to protect. When you do this, make sure that you and your boyfriend calm down so that the dogs see that everything's okay. If this doesn't work, you should try neutering one or both of them, unless one of you is a professional breeder and plan on raising puppies. That should lower the level of hormones in one of them so that dog would be more likely to back down.

I've also heard of situations where the dogs were made to sleep in crates right next to each other so they'd get used to the other dog's presence.

Your Schnauzer is not provoking the other dog, he's trying to establish dominance. As it is, you seem to have sided with the pitt bull. Of course the dog's powerful, but he's only as dangerous as you and your boyfriend let him be. If you have any other problems, you should see a professional trainer.

What should I get my new puppy before he arrives?

-I am getting a Chihuahua/Pinscher mix. It is a very small dog!!!

What type of food, shampoo(BY THE WAY, is it safe to use baby shampoo on my puppy?), and other stuff should i get him?

Should i get ITS stuff at WALMART?Dog bed, food/water dish, collar, leash, one of those things u use to hook 'em up outside, kennel (make sure it can turn stand and sit), chew toys, dog shampoo, flee treatment. That's all i can think of.I would also recommend a small crate. The dog may take a little while to adjust to a new home, and especially if it is a puppy being away from the mother and sibling can take some getting use to. A crate can be sort of a "den" or bedroom for dogs. They find they can hind there and feel safe. It is also great for potty training, because if the dog sleeps there it is very doubtful they will go to the bathroom where they sleep. Hope this help! Congrats on your new puppy and Good Luck!!
I find puppy shampoo a bit harsh and go with oatmeal from Petsmart. I would not use human shampoo.

You should get a travel/training crate, food, food bowls and an assortment of chew toys (rubber squeaky, rubber ball, rope, nyla-bone). Get some Nature's Miracle, you'll end up needing it.

The type of food you should get is the same type of food the breeder or shelter had it on.

Walmart here has a nice stainless bowl set for fairly cheap. Although it was too big for my 8 week old Dachshunds and I had to get a cat dish to feed them out of for a few weeks.
A bed, a bowl for food & a bowl for water, a collar & lead, some toys and an owner who's read all about keeping a dog : ) (Only use shampoo for dogs-you can get puppy shampoo. And you can buy his things anywhere-expensive doesn't mean better.)
You should ask whom ever you are getting the dog from. They will know everything that this dog likes and dislikes, and no you don't want to use baby shampoo on dogs, dog specified shampoo is best.
I have a list at http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?鈥?/a>

Mostly the stuff at Wal*Mart is fine. The breeder may even be feeding a food available there which you should stick with.
What kind is it?

Whats better ? A hamster or a rat ? ?

-I might get a rodent . What is better a hamster or a rat ? What are the pros or cons of each ? Thanks (: !Pros

-Easy to keep as pets.

-Keeping the hamster's cage clean requires less time and energy.

-Inexpensive to buy.

-Entertaining as pets.

Cons

-The hamster can escape from cages if not locked properly, or if kept in the open/attended.

-Short life spans.

a rat?

Pros:

-Rats are loving, adaptable, friendly animals who form very close bonds to their human companions.

-Rats don't require a whole lot of space or a yard or fancy equipment. Cages and toys can be homemade - they're not fussy!

-Rats are fairly inexpensive to keep happily fed and housed. Cages need to be cleaned every 4-5 days.

-Rats usually sleep during the day when most people are away at work or school, but can adapt to any sort of sleeping schedule that their owners have.

-Rats are social animals and love human attention and interaction. They are lots of fun to play with. Most are good traveling companions.

-Rats can be litter-box trained, but it does take lots of persistence.

-Rats are generally good with children and very patient, but they can't take too much rough handling. Supervision around small children who might accidentally drop, squeeze, sit or step on them is a must!

Cons:

-Rats do need a lot of attention - if you don't have an hour or two to spend with them a day, get mice instead! They also need a same-sex cage mate to keep them company for the times you can't be with them.

-Rats will chew on almost anything - usually power cords that are connected to expensive equipment, your favorite furniture, important papers, etc. They will also hoard everything they can carry such as batteries, small toys, pens, coins, rolls of paper towels, etc. They need a safe, rat-proof place to socialize and live.

-Rats can't stand temperatures above 80F. This means that in the hot summer, they need an air-conditioning or an alternative, such as ice bottles placed in their cages, cool air from fans, a cool basement to live in, etc.

+Clean fanatics

Cons:

-Nosy

-Can get big

-Will overfeed if allowed

-Short life span (2-5 years)

-Will die of social deprivation

-needs mental stimulation (toys, games like chase)

-needs lots of space

-Can get in any opening the size of its cheekbones or bigger
I've had both, and in my honest opinion, rats are much better.

Hamsters are sweet but they never stop running (they run from hand to hand...to hand to hand to hand....basically the entire time you have them out it's them running in your hands) and they're not really 'trainable'

Rats are very smart and if you take the time, trainable. They're sociable and you can keep 2 together (infact it's recommended) , with hamsters you can only have one. Read up on both of them , some people prefer hamsters, some people prefer rats. In my opinion rats are better but maybe you'd prefer a hamster, who knows.. Good luck choosing :)

Edit - er .....My rats never escaped, it was always my hamsters that got loose.. And robo hamsters make TERRIBLE pets. They hate being held, they're nervous and fidgety so basically you get a pet you can look at , nothing else..

If you do get a hamster, the best starter hamster is a teddy bear one.. it's a little larger and more laid back than other hamsters.

For rats, they're both sweet. people say males are more laid back and females are more playful but I think each individual rat has its own unique personality. The only pro's in males over female rats is female rats are more prone to growing tumors .
Definitely at least 2 rats of the same sex since they are such social animals and often do best with at least one cage mate. Rats are smarter, more social, & interactive than hamsters are. They don't mind (& often love) being handled and don't hardly ever bite. They're not nocturnal and can adjust their schedule to yours. If you want a pet that's nocturnal and likes to be left alone then a hamster would probably be good.
Rats. They will not escape from the cage as long as the bars are not too widely spaced and the door is closed securely.

Anyway rats are great pets, they are clean, smart (can learn tricks), they like being handled and they dont bite. Unlike a hamster a rat wont take a hissy fit if you wake it up, infact they will be happy as they will be able to come out and play
100% a rat!!!

I have owned both and i really loved my rats! They a super friendly and loving, They love cuddles and playing, They can be taught tricks and can respond to their own names. They don't take a lot of looking after all they need is attention. They are generally very clean as they are always grooming themselves. Once the cage and toys are bought they are inexpensive to keep.

A hamster on the other hand, Takes a long time to tame, and can be quite aggressive towards you. They do not respond to their names and you can't really teach them tricks. They prefer to live alone unlike rats where you can have like 6 in one cage!!

If i were you i'd go with rats!!
Both...

Rats are very social and friendly with time; same with hamsters although they enjoy sleeping most of the time :)

I had two robo hamsters too and they weren't terrible at all, The first one I would let him on his own around my room and he would follow me and eventually stay around me when he wanted to go back to his cage. The other one wouldn't even escape from me either, usually he would want to go back to his cage also lol. It just depends how you treat them and their personalities. Not all of them are bad and mean !
i had both, and i think you should get a hamster, becasue both of them used to get out of their cages alot, and when my rat got loose, it left holes in everything, and ate a bunch of stuff, my hamster didnt do that, it was just hard to find, also my hamster acts......LIKE A BOSS
A Rat.

They're super intelligent and can be taught almost any trick a Dog can learn.

They do NOT escape they're cage, I don't know what drugs people have they're Rat's on - they must not have happy Rats.

Rat's live 2-3 years, Hamsters live 1-2.

Rat's DO need an Hour at least of play time a day, but it's very rewarding when you get a full bath from your Rat child!

My cat doesnt like getting picked up!?

-My cat doesnt like being picked up or its tummy being touched or its back feet being touched. What do i do to make her not scratch me when i do those things!?She obviously is very sensitive, and maybe shes not used to being picked up. For every time you pick her up, I'd try giving her a treat, so she learns that being picked up is a good thing. Good luck! The tummy is a very vulnerable area, as that is where the disemboweling kick is done. And it is not unusual for a cat to not like their back feet being touched. So the easiest way to avoid being scratched is not to do those two things.

As far as not being picked up, think hard. Does being picked up precede a trip in the carrier to the vet? If so, that is what she associates being picked up with.

My oldest cat, very senior, is very affectionate on her terms, but don't try and pick her up. She knows what that usually means. And I accept that from her.
I had a kitten like that and it would scratch you if you tried to pet it. It was one of those indoor/outdoor cats, he would go out at night and come back to sleep in the morning. He eventually got over the petting issue as he got older and actually liked to be petted, but he was never fond of being picked up.
Many cats don't like being touched in certain places. It's not unusual. And the six toes thing is some rare gene. I don't think that it has anything to do with her not liking her feet being touched.
Don't do those things if she doesn't like them. Each pet has their own personality.

Would you agree that this particular form of cross breed has become a real breed?

-People from Birmingham in the UK have been developing a breed to work as a healthier version of the bull mastiff for guarding purposes by crossing rottweilers, english mastiff and some other similar breeds and are calling it a mastweiler, it has started to breed true and they are trying to get designer crosses of mastiffs and rottweilers renamed as rostiffs from where ever people get those names from.Is it recognised by any legitimate registries? No... so I wouldn't consider it a breed.

ETA - "I always thought that if a breed isn't registered in a kennel club it was because it hadn't been vetted enough not because it wasn't a breed."

Yes... it hasn't been proven to breed true, to have a good purpose (whether working or as a companion), etc. Whic means that it is not recognised as a breed.

Many people will tell you that a dog must be recognised by the KC or AKC to be a breed, which I disagree with. The FCI (the best, imo) recognises many breeds not yet recognised by the AKC or KC.

And then there are the sham registries which will register ANYTHING.

Personally, I feel that if the FCI recognises a breed, then it is a breed. Of course, this is open to debate, but anyone talking of made-up registries which will register such things as Labradoodles is wrong. Plain and simple.

They have been bred since the 80s? That isn't long enough for them to have been proven to breed true.

They are not a breed.A pure breed can't be bred back to the original breeds at all, ever. The real work comes when you try to seperate the good breeders who are dozens of generations out and breeding pure from the breeders who are still mixing first and second generation mixes. A mix between a pure breed rottie and a pure mastiff is NOT a purebred but you're going to have people selling them as purebreds as soon as the rostiff breed is accepted. The public needs to be educated more before anything new should be accepted as a purebred. I think they should have a name that is seperated from the names of either breed as well, not just a combo of both breed names.
No the mish-mash of names condemns it to be nothing but a designer breed.

Besides that, it's very hard to get a breed recognized any more.

ETA,

Don't ask for people's opinions if you can't handle people having opinions.

If this is only being bred for one company the gene pool can't be large enough to support a breed and there's no popularity to have a need for that large gene pool.
If they're working towards a specific goal and using proper breeding practices (not breeding a random lab and poodle and calling it a new breed) then it could well be on the way to becoming one. I don't know how hard it is though to get a breed registered and officially recognized, but honestly I think we could use a lot of changes in the dog world. I'm all for anyone working to create new healthier breeds or fixing problems in existing ones.
Definitely not.

The practise of crossing two breeds and calling them fancy names and charging ridiculous amounts of money for what in reality is just a mutt is getting completely out of hand.

There are 100`s of good breeds of dog that are suited to different types of work or just as pets and the world does not need any more added to that list.

Enough of even these dogs end up in rescue kennels.

When WILL people learn? Its just exploiting dogs for money and daft vulnerable people are stupid enough to pay out on what they "think" is something special. More fool them. JMO.
No way. And there is already a surfeit of breeds for various purposes. There is absolutely no need to create yet another breed of guard dog. Somebody just wants to pad their wallets with gullible rubes' hard-earned money.
No, I would not consider it a breed but a mix between 2 recognized breeds.
never heard of it - sorry.

ive got sheltie cross staffies, i dont call them shetland terriers!!
No, I don't consider it to be a real breed

I FOUND A CAT OUT ON THE STREET AND ITS HAVING SEIZURES?

-we already took it to the animal hospital and they asked to put it down, we found it amongst its dead siblings, a lone survivor fighting for life. we didnt let them put it down because it still has some fight left in it so they gave us glucose so it will have energy. it is dying from hunger, it is literally only skin and bones it is 4 weeks old and hasnt eaten since it was born, it is a miracle it is alive but it is having alot of seizures.

what should we do?Did they put a feeding tube in? Best thing to do for kittens is do a feeding tube! they can give meds through the tube. They can also give the kitten saline shots under the skin to hydrate and it wont need muscles.Have it euthanized as the vet already told you to do. Repeated seizure especially at this young an age cause irreparable damage. You are doing nothing but torturing the poor thing by prolonging its death by not euthanizing it.

Also it most definably has eaten (nursed) since it was born or it would be long dead from dehydration. Mother was likely killed on the street or by a predator and the kittens have since been starving.
Awww! I have a kitten named Dasha, she showed up on my doorstep as a tiny baby and she bascially never left and decided to take her in so i have a soft-spot for strays.

Give the poor thing a lot of food, water & milk, then take it to the Hospital ASAP! They will do soomethign about it, and no metter what dont let the life slip out of him. Give the baby cat another chance at life :)

x

-Maddie-
Contact the vet to find out if they think the seizure will disappear once the kittens gets healthy. Is the kitten eating and drinking normally now? How long have you had the kitten. Ask the vet all of these questions and both of you decide what is the best option. Thank you for rescuing this kitten. You have done all that you can do by following the vets directions. Keep it warm and out of drafts, try feeding it with an eye dropper with kitten formula and hold it close to your body. Best wishes.
I would take it to a different vet ASAP and ask them what to do. If they also suggest that it should be put down I would think their recommendation and ask myself if the cat is really that happy to keep living or if its suffering.
ah i dont even like pets et this makes me sad. if the cat makes it keep feeding it lots of healthy and nutritional food and keep it warm(except if its hot summer)
You get KMR kitten milk replacement and keep feeding it. NOT cow milk, that will cause explosive diarrhea.
poor thing! take it to the hospital. have them put an iv in it?

Why does my cat like to lay on top of things (such as clothes, paper, etc)?

-anytime there is something on the floor (or even couch, or bed)

she loves to lay on top of it. it's like having something to lay on makes her feel special?

is that it? a pampering thing?

it could be a sheet of paper, a t-shirt, your flip flop, anything and she loves to lay on top of it.LOL! I love cats, they are so fun. My three cats do this also and it is always funny to me and seeing your question made me laugh. A flip flop! I think they must love having something between them and the floor? My cats love to lay on the dirty/clean laundry. We were storing a few mattresses in their room for a while and they loved to perch on the very top (right by the ceiling.) They have also found blankets and hide under them while they sleep. Also very funny.Freshly washed clothes are a luxury to cats - they love Clean New smelling things.

As Far as any other objects/things go they love to claim them as their own things!! Ha!

They like to put their scent on everything new! They like to remind you that they are there!

Ultimately Cats are very very curious and love to investigate all new things in their domain!
I think every cat does stuff like that my cat loved laying in boxes that he could barely fit in haha & he always layed on backpacks its a cat thing I think haha
Cats will tend to lay on things that smell like their owner. My cats do this all the time.

True or false all dogs become aggressive when muzzled, when normally they are not..aggressive?

-Friend told me that but I have no experience muzzling a dog, thinking about doing it to two dogs until they learn to trust each other...False, not "ALL" dogs become aggressive no matter what you do to them.

Muzzles won't cause dogs to trust each other.

Muzzles won't teach a dog to like another dog.

Dogs are just like people. They either like someone or they don't. You can't force people to like each other and you can't force dogs to like each other.UTTERLY FALSE. It doesn't make them less aggressive, either. All it does is minimize the potential for injury. Basket muzzles (www.dogmuzzles.com) should be fitted loosely enough that the dog can pant and drink while muzzled. Run the strap around the collar so the muzzle can't be pulled off. With pressure applied, so the dog's teeth are touching the mesh, it is still possible for minor bites to occur. It is not wise to leave muzzled dogs together unattended, if they are strangers or not getting along.

Personally, I wish there were laws requiring all dogs to be muzzled in public. It would prevent a lot of injuries and save lives of dogs who are now considered unadoptable or undesirable because of a history of biting.
Some dogs don't like muzzles, and may be scared when forced to wear one if the handler goes about introducing the muzzle in the wrong way. In bad circumstances, or with a very fearful/aggressive dog, I suppose it could happen, yes.

The key is making wearing the muzzle a positive experience for the dog through reward.
False. Not all, but some most definitely would because they feel helpless.

Muzzling a dog is not a good way to introduce 2 dogs. If you have 2 dogs you aren't sure of, you need another person with you to help you and you have to be really, really good at reading dogs' body language.
False

But you are not describing "all dogs" nor dogs that are normally not aggressive or else you wouldn't be considering muzzling them.
Definitely false.
Completely false.
I would become agressive, wouldn't you?
depends on dogs it does happen sometimes
False.

How can I find a dog food that my dog will eat?

-My dog is a Westie and is 4 years old and she won't eat her food unless I put honey on it. My family gives her Science Diet Adult for Small and Toy Breeds. How can I find her dog food that she likes?I wouldn't eat Science diet either. That junk is full of corn and by products. Why feed a carnivore a diet like that? Dogs should eat a meat based diet. Usually dogs prefer the dog foods that have a lot of real meat in them. I know my dogs and my cat do. I feed them all Orijen flavors and Acana Grasslands and my picky dog LOVES them. My cat is also extremely picky but she loves Wellness CORE. All are meat based foods. You can buy cheap sample bags of Orijen and Acana and Wellness will send samples for free. Pretty much all foods make sample/trial sizes so you can get a few good meat based healthy brands and see what she likes best. I don't see the point in making your dog eat the same food that it can't stand day in and day out....

Sorry labman, coming at me is completely pointless and so is your copy and paste answer that also gives no facts. And you are contradicting yourself saying "feed a meat based chow" when Science Diet is far from meat based. Don't attack someone else's post when your own post proves nothing :) According to my vet and biology, my dogs are carnivores so I'm going to feed them like one. I have a right to believe what i want. Dogs have no need for grains so why give it to them? If you want to be cheap and feed your dog corn based crap good for you but don't attack me and other posters (like you do in every dog food question you answer) who believe in feeding a meat based diet. That is quite pathedic and proves you have WAY too much time on your hands.Honey probably isn't too good for her. This may sound cruel, but our vet is the one who told us to do this, so....

Give them their food. If they won't eat, take it away and try again a few hours later. If they still won't eat, take it away again. Eventually their hunger will get the better of them.

Believe me, she'll eat her food before she begins to suffer from any sort of malnutrition. It only took my dog about half a day.
YOU decide what the dog eats -- with or without honey. Put the dish down. If she won't eat it, pick it up and offer in in two hours. Repeat as necessary. When your dog is hungry, she'll eat. Easy. No problem. Best answer.
Many dogs will wolf down more than is good for them and look for more. Others refuse to eat more than than they need. Evaluate the dog as illustrated in this link, http://www.longliveyourdog.com/twoplus/R鈥?/a> You may want the vet to confirm your judgment. Adjust the dogs food and exercise as needed to reach its ideal body condition. Some German Shepherds and other breeds may refuse to eat enough to completely hid their ribs. As long as you are feeding a concentrated, meat based chow, the best thing is to accept it.

The worst thing you can do is to bribe a dog with rich foods into eating more than it needs. Instead, Put down the dish with what the dog should eat, and give it 15 minutes to eat. Then take it up. Do not give it anything to eat until its next scheduled meal. In a few days, it should be eating what it needs. Continue to check its ribs and adjust the food as needed. This is not easy. I had a Shepherd go 3 days on a few nibbles. I was a wreck, but she was fine. It is almost unknown for a healthy dog not to eat what it needs. Unfortunately, in too many cases, it is less than the package says, and less than the owner thinks the dog should have. Many dogs are quite good at holding out for tastier chow. Like kids, sometimes it calls for tough love.

Note, @Onyx has no evidence to back bashing Science Diet.
I like bobs answer, and agree that honey wouldnt be the best for any dog. their are sampler bags out there and have you thought of wetting it. if you do throw it out each time you have to remove it.
i am the spokesman for gravy train. get it. she will eat it. its nutricious and delicious

Heating w/ Bigger Snakes?

-Pretty common sense I guess but I wanted other opinions on the matter. I have a 5ft Desert Kingsnake. I've given her the choice on hides and her heat. If I have her heat pad under a hide, she wont use it. If I have the heat pad under the center, she uses the hide. If I use the heat lamp, shes stays in the hide until night. If she soaks its at night, after the suns gone down. When I pic her up in the morning her body is cold but she doesn't use the heating elements I've provided. So ultimately. Should I try a different heat source or eliminate then all together?maybe your basking spot is too hot try sticking a heat mat to side of the tank

PLEASE HELP: A couple Q's about feeding a dizzy rat? (inner ear infection(vertigo)?

-My rat(Binkie) has vertigo. She has an inner ear infection, and maybe a brain tumor. I've been feeding her baby food through a syringe. Here are my questions:

1. How can I tell if she's hungry?

2. How can I tell if I've fed her too much? (I've fed her a lot today and she's still eating more?)

3. Since she's used to solid food, does it make since that she's bruxing right after I give it to her?

4. I've never heard of this before, at first I thought she was having a seizure. But I guess when rats like,, shake their heads it's equivelant to a cat purring?

5. She doesn't like drinking water out of the syringe. How can I give it to her? (she was sucking on a wet piece of toilet paper I was using to clean her mouth after the baby food, so maybe she's thirsty and doesnt like the syringe? But I TP is soft, and I don't want her to get it in her mouth and try to smallow it (the first night before we got her to a vet she choked on a piece of a melon)

6. Can she eat jell~o through a syringe? ;)

7. She's not... pooing too much. Only once or twice in 2 days. But she she didn't eat for 3 days before we found out she had the problem. Is it possible that the food we gave her two days ago hasn't fully gone through her digestive system yet?

8. Any more advice is GREEEAT.

Pleeeease help! ANY help at all is appreciated. I want her to be safe, the poor thing might not have too much longer, I don't want her to go cuzza starving;( I mean, I've been through soo much just worrying about how she might die of a brain tumor, if she dies of hunger, it'll be stuuupid.

Please help!

amber.erica@yahoo.comAbout a month ago, I took my Hairless Female Rat to the vet because she was spinning in circles with her head tilted. The vet was unaware if it was a Brain Tumor or a Bacterial Infection (she had an Upper Respiratory Infection about two months before) that spread to her Brain. The vet kept her for two nights, and they kept telling me she wasn't going to get any better - so my mom and I decided to have her put down, it was one of the hardest decisions I had ever made. My dad built her a coffin, and we planned to have her euthanized the next day. The vet had her on an Anti-biotic and Prednisone (a steroid.) However, when we called to tell the vet, we were told she miraculously got better and was ready to come home! (Prayer works!)

When we brought her home, we were given the Anti-biotic and the steroid to give her twice a day and we knew it wouldn't be easy, and I was faced with some of the problems you have now. To answer your questions, from my own experience I can say this:

1 - 3:

I placed a tupperware lid in my Rat's quarantine cage and got two different types of baby foods (a banana one for breakfast/lunch and a chicken one for lunch/dinner) and put it on the lid and sat it in the cage - changing it three times a day for the three different meals. I also made sure to give her water through a syringe to make sure she was staying hydrated and I left a food and water bowl in the cage for when she was strong enough to do things on her own.

4:

I can't say the answer to that, I always thought when my rat's stood on their legs and bobbed their heads it was a good sign :p

5:

Sometimes you have to physically get the syringe in her mouth and sort of help her swallow, because for some reason Rat's see a syringe and automatically don't like the take what's in it even though it's useful. So you might need to put it in her mouth and squirt it in, because Rat's know that once it's in their mouths, they're going to swallow because it's easier.

6:

I wouldn't feed them jell-o :)

7:

When my Rat came home from the vet, she didn't Poop for three days, and she didn't Pee for longer than that. However, once she started going again, it became normal again - she's sick, so it's normal for her to be weak.

8:

- Make sure to leave water and food in the cage at all times in case your rat absolutely needs it during the night or she regains her strength.

- Pray, if you're religious. Hope, if you're not - it works.

- Keeping a lid with baby food in the cage is good because they can always come back to it throughout the day and lap it up, but also try and feed her dissolved rat pellets through the syringe for necessary nutrients.

- Keep the cage warm, but not the whole cage in case it's too warm for the Rat to withstand.

- Don't give up and make sure to give your Rat just as much love because you never know what's going to happen.

I hope your rat gets better, and I sincerely hope I helped! You may want to take her to a vet to be diagnosed. Then that way she could get the proper treatment and/or meds she may need.
I'm sorry about your pet. Here's a little help...

1. Have her on a regular feeding schedule. For most rodents, I'd guess that it would be about every 6hrs. You can be lenient since she's an adult, and go up to 8hrs for sleep and school/work.

2. You can feel her belly when you're feeding her. If her stomach is full, it will be taught & harder. (Think about how your belly expands when you eat a large meal. It gets harder.)

3. that's normal. Bruxing is activated as part of the food stimulation.

5. you're on the right track. You can put a wet sea spunge in her cage with her. Do not use the commercial sponges with dyes and chemicals, rather find one that is natural, unprocessed. Place the sponge in a small tray of water and it will continuously stay moist and your pet can drink the water from the sponge. If you can't find a sponge, you can try a 100% cotton wash cloth.

6. I think that's a bad idea. Would you want someone force feeding you chocolate cake?

7. She's probably not getting the proper nutrition required for her to have normal bowel function. Don't worry, just get her on a normal feeding schedule and everything should correct itself.

Good luck!
I would suggest getting a small scale, such as one used for measuring food(they sometimes sell as low as $20). You need to weigh her now, and keep record of her weight. If you see a drop in weight than you are not feeding enough. It is the best way to ensure you are feeding her enough.

You can also get a product called Nutrical, it is a supplement that is made for weight gain. It is a good product for keeping weight on an ill animal.

When are you going back to the vet? Is she circling when she walks, falling over, etc. If that is the case, it is not a good sign.

My dog has a lump a little bigger than a golf ball any ideas what it might be please help?

-it is on her back legthis might be a tumor so take the dog to the vet to have a check up about it , my dog had a lump at the back of her mouth the same size as a golf ball so we took her to the vet and they gived her some anti biotic tablets and now it's gone so i hope this happens with your dog as well good luck with your dog i hope it goes ! :) i hopped this helpedIt could be a cyst, a tumor, or an internal infection if she's had any puppies in the past several months. You should definitely take her to the vet, stat!
Have a vet check it out. Could be a tumor or a cyst. Either way a vet can determine what it is.
Did she hit her leg somehow? Maybe it's swollen?

It could be a tumor or something related to that.
it could be a cancerous tumour. its really hard to tell over the internet. you should go to the vet.

Can rats live in sterilite containers?

-Or will they eat their way outI have kept rats in sterilite containers and never had an escape.Rats need to be kept in cages for ventilation as they can be prone to breathing problems.
You /can/, but it's not a good idea. Go for a cage or aquarium- they need space and air!
No!!! Would you like to live in a container??

If one dog from a pair of bonded dogs dies, how will the live one cope?

-I have two dogs. My dog Sam is blind in one eye, and he was paralyzed a couple months ago. It broke my heart to see him like that, but thankfully feeling in his back legs slowly returned with bed rest and medication. But now his health is rapidly deteriorating. Kona my other dog, loves him so much. She grew up around him and is 5 years younger. She loves him so much and cries when he isn't around. When he was at the vet she stayed up all night crying at the door. I know death is inevitable, but I am not sure if Kona can cope with Sam's death. Does anyone have any experience with this? Any answers would help.Yes, I do. My grandmother had 2 dogs. One was a White West Highland Terrier named Callie, and the other was a mixed breed of poodle, Lhasa Apso, Maltese, Shih Tsu, and a few more. The dogs were bought around the same time, and were very close to each other. One of the dogs, Tillie, died due to heart problems. Callie took it horribly. (Sorry.) She spent about a month carrying around Tillie's favorite toy, and spent hours looking for Tillie and wondering where she could be. Every time that Callie was given a treat, Tillie would take it from her and eat it herself. Callie never ate her treat because she always put it aside for Tillie. After a year, Callie stopped grieving, but always seemed lonely and in need of companionship. My family babysat her for a year or two. She got along and made friends with our 2 dogs, and seemed a lot happier all the time than she was at her own home because of the other dogs. Tillie passed at 12-14, and Callie passed at nearly 18.

I suggest that when Sam passes, you need to distract Kona by buying a new dog. I'm so sorry about poor Sam. <:)I've dealt with it many times.

Most dogs seem a little confused for a couple of weeks. Some will seem to look for the dog that is gone. Some will pine noticeably. Nearly all will be over it in a couple of weeks or so.

Some will not seem to notice or care at all. And then there is the very small percentage that will pine for a considerable time. All they need is distraction. They are not like humans. They do not "feel sorry" for the other dog or anything like that.
Some dogs don't cope with it and shortly die after. Some are sad until it's their time to go. Some aren't bothered by it. You won't know until it happens. My grandma's oldest dog died a year ago and her other dog that was close to her didn't seem to notice at all.
your surviving dog will look for the other one for maybe a day or two but she will move on. Dogs do not grieve.
This is exactly what happened to me. You sort of know when your dogs last days are, so try and observe how bad Sam is doing. In the last few weeks, I tried to make my dog more independent and less attached to my other dog. Take them on separate walks, keep them in different rooms as much as possible. Maybe try getting another dog after Sam's death to help Kona cope, not as a replacement, but just for her reassurement. Some dogs never recover after their best friend has died, others eventually pick themselves back up. Try asking at your vet next time you go - I wish Kona, you and Sam especially the best.
I had two Shetland Sheep Dogs (aka: Shelties), that grew up together. When one died, the other went into deep mourning and depression. He would just cry, and and lay around all the places the other dog use to hang out. he wouldn't play, or eat for about two weeks. I thought I was gonna lose him too. I'm sure it didn't help that I was a wreck, crying all the time too.

But, eventually he got better. He was never 100% the same as before. Like if we mentioned the other dogs name, he would perk up, and go look for her, then come back to you and look at you like "where is she, I can't find her".

What really helped was when he got a new mission in life. When we finally got a new puppy, he went into "daddy" mode.

But, some dogs will never recover. I feel so bad for you all, and hope for the best.

I adopted relaxed (when indoors) retriever/shepherd (2 yrs old) and he is very energetic outside I have ------?

-discovered

One thing I don't understand is the issue regarding letting him run off his energy in the off leash areas where I live (none of them are fenced)

The advice I get online is never ever let your dog off leash unless he does exactly as he is told 100% of the time every time. I agree.

So wjat do people do when they have slightly rambunctious dogs that behave very well indoors but will never be 100% outside?

This dog is 65lbs and very strong and energetic

I am thinking of getting a special treadmill especially for dogs (expensive!) and then he can have two twenty minute jogs as well as have regular leashed walks three times a day for potty breaks in the park? You can just get a normal used treadmill for way cheaperPeople can always leash their dogs up and go running to run off a dog's energy...completely free to do that.

In many areas, the law is the dog is to be leashed no matter what when outside, unless in a fence. So even if the dog is well trained and such, the law is they are to be leashed. That's the case in most areas of the US.
I dont think the tread mill will work unless you hang a treat in front of the tread mill and dont let him go around

I dunno what the question is.
Why can't you take him to a dog park?? Why will he never listen 100% outside? Train him!
Why don`t you train your dog so he does a good re-call?

Then you will be able to let him off for a good run.

All dogs need to let off steam and run free and be able to exhibit natural canine behaviour now and then.

He is probably quite frustrated at being kept on a leash all the time.

Training is the answer and all dogs need to be trained in the re-call and other basic exercises like sit, down, and wait (or stay) and to walk to heel on a lead.

No dog on this earth is 100% obedient every time. Dogs are like children at times and don`t always do as they are told when something more interesting takes their attention. If you can get a dog to respond 95% of the time to all commands then you will doing well.

Add: Take him somewhere where there are are NO roads then.

How do you think the rest of the us manage?

We train our dogs and we take them to safe places.

YOU might trip over and break your leg tomorrow. Nothing is 100% safe in this world. My dogs are off lead EVERY day in the woods and fields.

I drive them out to safe venues. I would not let them loose anywhere near a highway where trucks and cars are. I train them to come when i call. 99% of the time they obey. Get training, thats my advice. Dogs don`t learn things on their own, they need to be shown.
teach him the recall command by getting a long leash like the ones people use to tie dogs up outside hook the leash on to the dog on one end and hold the leash on the other end and either say the dogs name or "come" then pull the leash so the dog runs to you when he gets to you reward him and do it again keep doing this until the dog gets the command and this isnt a quick fix it may take several training sessions for him to get it but the recall command is very effective when dogs are off leash and teach him how to stay close when off leash by making him walk next to you when on the leash and praise him when he does so
A treadmill isn't a bad idea it's just a matter of getting him to use it. You could try a dog training class group should be cheaper plus your dog will socialize and learn to with distractions so then you will more confidence in him. You could also try an electric collar and classes http://www.lifewithoutaleash.com/ i realize that website is not in your location but it will have information about the E-Collar and give you an idea about what the classes may be like. Good Luck!

Fire Bellied Toad Care?

-Can anybody tell me EVERYTHING you need for 2 or 3 Fire bellied toads and please don't copy paste a care sheet just list the things and please tell me if you want to breed them is it best to keep male and female, female female male, or male male female? Thanks in advance.I know you said don't copy and paste a care sheet, but the link I'm giving you is to a care sheet that I PERSONALLY wrote. It's on my blog:

http://wildsideanimal.tumblr.com/post/37鈥?/a>

SUMMARY:

You will need:

-at least a 10 gallon tank for three toads

-a tight-fitting screen lid

-a large water area in the tank with water that's 2 to 5 inches deep

-a land area with moss, reptile soil, or very large pebbles (that can't be swallowed)

-food (can be crickets, meal worms, wax worms, "red wrigglers," roaches, fruit flies, etc)

-calcium and vitamin supplements for nutrition

That's it! Firebellies are pretty simple to take care of. They don't need any special lighting (as long as they aren't in the dark), do perfectly at room temperature, etc.

BREEDING: You need to give them at least a six-week period of colder temperatures. They will not want to breed unless they think they've just survived winter. Make their environment colder (no colder than 45 degrees Fahrenheit) and feed them a little bit less based on their activity level. When the cold time is up, let it gradually get warmer and increase the availability of food.

GENDER: If you're keeping three firebellies (and especially if you plan on breeding them), then I think it'd be best to have one male and two females. It's not good to have males fighting one another. Also, you'll get more babies with two females. :)
