-I might get a rodent . What is better a hamster or a rat ? What are the pros or cons of each ? Thanks (: !Pros

-Easy to keep as pets.

-Keeping the hamster's cage clean requires less time and energy.

-Entertaining as pets.

Cons

-The hamster can escape from cages if not locked properly, or if kept in the open/attended.

-Short life spans.

a rat?

Pros:

-Rats are loving, adaptable, friendly animals who form very close bonds to their human companions.

-Rats don't require a whole lot of space or a yard or fancy equipment. Cages and toys can be homemade - they're not fussy!

-Rats are fairly inexpensive to keep happily fed and housed. Cages need to be cleaned every 4-5 days.

-Rats usually sleep during the day when most people are away at work or school, but can adapt to any sort of sleeping schedule that their owners have.

-Rats are social animals and love human attention and interaction. They are lots of fun to play with. Most are good traveling companions.

-Rats can be litter-box trained, but it does take lots of persistence.

-Rats are generally good with children and very patient, but they can't take too much rough handling. Supervision around small children who might accidentally drop, squeeze, sit or step on them is a must!

Cons:

-Rats do need a lot of attention - if you don't have an hour or two to spend with them a day, get mice instead! They also need a same-sex cage mate to keep them company for the times you can't be with them.

-Rats will chew on almost anything - usually power cords that are connected to expensive equipment, your favorite furniture, important papers, etc. They will also hoard everything they can carry such as batteries, small toys, pens, coins, rolls of paper towels, etc. They need a safe, rat-proof place to socialize and live.

-Rats can't stand temperatures above 80F. This means that in the hot summer, they need an air-conditioning or an alternative, such as ice bottles placed in their cages, cool air from fans, a cool basement to live in, etc.

I've had both, and in my honest opinion, rats are much better.

Hamsters are sweet but they never stop running (they run from hand to hand...to hand to hand to hand....basically the entire time you have them out it's them running in your hands) and they're not really 'trainable'

Rats are very smart and if you take the time, trainable. They're sociable and you can keep 2 together (infact it's recommended) , with hamsters you can only have one. Read up on both of them , some people prefer hamsters, some people prefer rats. In my opinion rats are better but maybe you'd prefer a hamster, who knows.. Good luck choosing :)

Edit - er .....My rats never escaped, it was always my hamsters that got loose.. And robo hamsters make TERRIBLE pets. They hate being held, they're nervous and fidgety so basically you get a pet you can look at , nothing else..

If you do get a hamster, the best starter hamster is a teddy bear one.. it's a little larger and more laid back than other hamsters.

For rats, they're both sweet. people say males are more laid back and females are more playful but I think each individual rat has its own unique personality. The only pro's in males over female rats is female rats are more prone to growing tumors .
Definitely at least 2 rats of the same sex since they are such social animals and often do best with at least one cage mate. Rats are smarter, more social, & interactive than hamsters are. They don't mind (& often love) being handled and don't hardly ever bite. They're not nocturnal and can adjust their schedule to yours. If you want a pet that's nocturnal and likes to be left alone then a hamster would probably be good.
Rats. They will not escape from the cage as long as the bars are not too widely spaced and the door is closed securely.

Anyway rats are great pets, they are clean, smart (can learn tricks), they like being handled and they dont bite. Unlike a hamster a rat wont take a hissy fit if you wake it up, infact they will be happy as they will be able to come out and play
100% a rat!!!

I have owned both and i really loved my rats! They a super friendly and loving, They love cuddles and playing, They can be taught tricks and can respond to their own names. They don't take a lot of looking after all they need is attention. They are generally very clean as they are always grooming themselves. Once the cage and toys are bought they are inexpensive to keep.

A hamster on the other hand, Takes a long time to tame, and can be quite aggressive towards you. They do not respond to their names and you can't really teach them tricks. They prefer to live alone unlike rats where you can have like 6 in one cage!!

If i were you i'd go with rats!!
Both...

Rats are very social and friendly with time; same with hamsters although they enjoy sleeping most of the time :)

I had two robo hamsters too and they weren't terrible at all, The first one I would let him on his own around my room and he would follow me and eventually stay around me when he wanted to go back to his cage. The other one wouldn't even escape from me either, usually he would want to go back to his cage also lol. It just depends how you treat them and their personalities. Not all of them are bad and mean !
i had both, and i think you should get a hamster, becasue both of them used to get out of their cages alot, and when my rat got loose, it left holes in everything, and ate a bunch of stuff, my hamster didnt do that, it was just hard to find, also my hamster acts......LIKE A BOSS
A Rat.

They're super intelligent and can be taught almost any trick a Dog can learn.

They do NOT escape they're cage, I don't know what drugs people have they're Rat's on - they must not have happy Rats.

Rat's live 2-3 years, Hamsters live 1-2.

Rat's DO need an Hour at least of play time a day, but it's very rewarding when you get a full bath from your Rat child!
