-I've run out of dog food and haven't had the chance to drive the 100 mile distance required to get more. So this morning I fed him ground chicken mixed with scrambled egg. Was that ok? I've only given him a little and he's begging for more, but I don't want to over do it if it's not healthy for him. Is it ok?its fine.. I wouldnt over do it tho, his system may not be used to it tho and may cause loose stools.
for future reference.. here's some acceptable things you can use for "replacement" meals to get you by for a day or two until you can get dog food..
any un-processed/ un-seasoned meats.. do not feed cooked bones!
eggs
plain boiled rice can be used as filler
veggies- carrots, green beans, peas are good to use as filler
dont use as a long-term diet.. only something to feed your dog for a day or so.
I've also gotton a can or two of cheap garbage dog food.. I figure its no worse than me having McDonald's on occassion.
ADDED
Dogs are CARNIVORES! Everything about their dentation and digestive system is that of a CARNIVORE
the reason dog food has grains and veggies is because its CHEAP FILLER.. and also veggies are there to market the dog food and make it appealing to human buyers. Humans think that veggies equates to healthy.. so if the dog food has veggies, it must be healthy! Dogs really get little to no nutrition from vegetation matter.. their bodies just are not designed to break it down.
Its cheap filler.. but not going to provide your dog with adequate nutrition.100 miles!? where do you live the alaskan wilderness?
it's ok, but it's not the best food for the dog because of the fat content, so it will work as a substitute but your dog may end up getting a bit chunky if you feed it to him regularly, it's also why the dog likes it so much
also there are a lot of vitamins and minerals in the dry food that aren't life threatening but again, are more healthy for the dog than chicken or eggs
ground chicken mixed with scrambled egg is better than the dog food you feed him.
nekkid is right - dogs are physiologically designed to eat meat. commercial dog food contains grains because it's a cheaper source of protein than meat, and fruits & vegetables are present simply to play to the human notion that 'fruits and veggies are health food for us, so they must be for dogs too'"
I feed mostly from-the-grocery food; meats, organs, raw meaty bones. I supplement with kibble to help hedge against swings in overall nutritional balance.
I'll feed baby carrots and apple slices, yogurt occassionally just as a treat... but I don't include non-meats otherwise. I saw enough undigested sweet potato & such in my dogs poops, it drove the point home for me.
Yes it is alright. Just don't do it too often otherwise you dog will not want dog food. My family has 5 dogs and we run out of dog food ever now and then. We feed our dogs table food all the time (During family meals) and they never get sick. one time my golden retriever mix ate a whole pot of spaghetti, she was bloated for a few days but she was fine. and one time my chihuahua-terrier mix ate my salad, but of course she was mainly after the bacon in the salad. And contrary to popular belief chocolate is not poison for dogs. unless dogs suddenly became rodents while I wasn't looking its okay, just not dark chocolate. in fact while I am typing I have chocolate in front of me and my chihuahua is sitting next to me begging for some and yes I am going to give her some once I am done typing.
It should be fine short term, but contrary to popular belief, domestic dogs are omnivores, not carnivores. This is why dog food contains veggies, fruits, and sometimes grains. It will be fine for a few days until you can get to the store, but any longer than that would be a bad idea.
I've never understood how people can run out of dog food. I live quite a good distance from the nearest town, and have 5 dogs, and have never run out of dog food. I buy three 44 pound bags at a time. You can't tell me that you don't have a little town market that sells the smaller bags of dog food.
As long as it's not seasoned or anything, it should be fine.
You know you can buy dog food in larger amounts, split it up into plastic tubs, and freeze it for future use?
It's fine in a pinch like you are in, but as soon as you can.. Go buy his regular everyday food. BOILED white meat chicken is great for dogs, raw eggs are also ok.
Don't feed your dog greasy stuff, give him dry stuff like peace of a slice of bread with nothing on it, I feed my maltese bread all the time she haven't gained weight or got sick...moderated of course
that should be ok for one meal or two but you shouldn't feed your dog lots more :) just incase it might give him/her an upset tummy :)
It's ok at least he is eating and he is a carnivore so the meal was healthy
The chicken should be fine, but i'm not sure about the egg. Especially when it's scrambled.
I feed my dog that all the time it should be fine
Was it raw chicken???
Nekkid Truth is spot on.
(here's an extra thumbs up!)
it should be okay
